Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant (2026): how much and who can apply
In England and Wales you can get a government grant towards replacing fossil fuel heating with a heat pump (or, in limited cases, a biomass boiler). From 21 July 2026 the main rates are £7,500 for an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, £2,500 for an air-to-air heat pump, and £9,000 for an air-to-water or ground source heat pump in an off-gas-grid property replacing oil or LPG. Your installer applies for you and takes the grant off the quote.

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Who can apply?
You must own the property (including a second home, a business premises, or one you rent out) and be replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG. The scheme is for England and Wales. You can still apply if you have already had funding for insulation or other energy-efficiency work.

Who cannot get a grant?
Most new builds still being built by a developer, social housing, and a property that has already had government funding or support for a heat pump or biomass boiler are not eligible. New builds that are finished and already have a fossil fuel boiler may still qualify for a heat pump grant. Self builds can be eligible if you or the original owner built them and they have never been owned by a business or organisation.

How do I apply?
Contact suitable MCS-certified installers for quotes (GOV.UK requires an MCS-certified installer for this scheme), confirm you are eligible, then agree a quote. The installer applies on your behalf on the Ofgem website. The grant is taken off what you pay and must appear on the quotation and invoice. Ofgem may contact you to confirm the installer is acting for you, and may phone or visit to check the installation.
How long do I have after the application?
Your installer must commission and install the heat pump within 120 days of applying for the grant, or it will not be eligible.

How long does the scheme run?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (England and Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2026 extend the scheme through to 2030. The Warm Homes Plan allocates about £2.7 billion to the scheme to 2030. Grant rates and rules can still change, so check GOV.UK before you commit.

Is there help for biomass boilers?
Yes, but only in limited cases: the property must be off the gas grid, in a rural location, and the boiler must have an emissions certificate showing polluting emissions are kept to a minimum. You cannot get a biomass grant for a self-build property. The grant value for eligible biomass installations is £5,000.
