Smart charger rules for home EV chargepoints
Since 30 June 2022, home and workplace chargepoints sold in Great Britain must be smart. Here is what that means for you.
Last checked: 14 October 2026. Schemes change, so confirm on GOV.UK before you commit.
What must a smart charger do?
Send and receive information, respond to signals to shift charging, keep working with a different electricity supplier, keep charging if it loses connection, measure energy use, and meet a cyber-security standard (ETSI EN 303 645).

Will it charge off-peak by default?
Chargers must come with pre-set off-peak default charging hours, which you can accept, remove or change on first use and later. They must also support a randomised delay.
